The 2025 Range Rover Velar compact luxury SUV is beautifully crafted, with high-quality interior materials and a silhouette that evokes its larger sibling in the full-size SUV category. But with the Range Rover name prominently displayed across its snout, the Velar tows big expectations behind it. Our experience with this model has taught us that the base turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine doesn't deliver performance to worry rivals like the Porsche Macan and BMW X3. The better choice is the optional 395-hp turbocharged-and-supercharged 3.0-liter inline-six found in the Velar P400; this powertrain gives the Velar far more pep for confidently tackling short highway entrance ramps and passing on two lanes. Ground clearance is better than average for this segment at 8.4 inches, meaning the Velar is capable of light off-roading, even if most owners won't dare take this handsome confection farther from the road than the shopping mall parking lot. There's a lot here to satisfy your aesthetic sense, but little that invites you to get in and drive.
